Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system is expected to come with a new application development platform and a new PDF reader app, leaked builds and screenshots suggest.

According to a post made by bloggers and Windows experts Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, Microsoft’s Windows 8 will come with a new application development platform which will allow developers to create apps that work on both Windows 8 tablets and Windows Phone.

Microsoft will be adopting the AppX platform for Windows 8 to offer developers a unified, common environment for developing apps for both Windows tablets and smartphones.

Rivera and Thurrott believe that AppX is paving the ground for cross-platform applications for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 as well. Having analysed recently leaked builds and screenshots, the pair say AppX very closely resembles Windows Phone 7 application packages.

“For this reason, we surmise that the AppX application type could be common to both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 (codenamed ‘Apollo’), providing developers with a way to write applications that target and can transition between a variety of devices, including traditional PCs, tablets, and phone,” the two bloggers wrote.

The duo also outed the details of a new PDF reader app which is expected to make its debut on Windows 8, the Modern Reader app, which, according to the bloggers, will be based on the AppX platform. Leaked screenshots from the app can also be seen here.

The Windows 8 operating system is expected to be launched in late 2012, with tablets running on the new OS being released around the same time.
